Tomoe Ryokan
Until its renovation in 1989, the Tomoe was a much-loved, two-story wooden inn dating from the 1920’s. This Ryokan (traditional-style Japanese inn) has accommodated some of modern Japan’s most illustrious figures, including Prime Ministers Eisaku Sato (1901-75) and Nobusuke Kisi (1896-1987), and even the Emperor Showa (previously known as Emperor Hirohito).
In 1989, the old Tomoe Ryokan closed and a new one was built by the Matsumoto River, not far from the waterfront. The new building resembles a Japanese castle, with the gate and facade of a high-ranking samurai mansion. Inside, the inn is a haven of wide open spaces and uncompromising luxury.
Guests relish the extraordinary sense of tranquility and privacy here – the spacious guestrooms are adorned with lovely scrolls and ceramics. Antiques and exquisite tableware at Tomoe are the original selections of the inn’s third-generation ‘okami’ (‘innkeeper’), who was renowned for her impeccable taste and uncompromising standards.
