Paris Expert Imogen Macnaghten shares the first installment of her regular Paris column, featured exclusively on eTraveljournal.com:
January and February are great months in Paris - you only share the city with the Parisians as the holiday season is over - just wrap up warm, load up the camera and you’re off!
Beginning of the year - let’s start right at the heart of Paris - in the 1st Arrondissement.
Start the evening off with a great martini at the Hotel Costes (239 Rue St. Honore, Paris, 75001) - it’s achingly hip, full of the beautiful people - give them a run for their money! Why not make the evening last longer and order an appetizer with that?
Starting to feel ‘peckish’... well I have just the ticket - for some fine wholesome French fayre, try Le Ménage d’Ecuyer (6 rue de la sourdiere, Paris, 75001; Tel: 01 49 27 00 64). Janine runs the place with a warm smile and attention to detail - she’ll not miss a thing. Service is smooth (it did have a haphazard phase when I was short of a sou or two and took to waitressing) and the food has a traditional basis with a contemporary finish. You’ll not be disappointed! There is a fine selection of wines - nothing too fancy but personal choices of Janine and her husband, who is the chef. This is a small local restaurant in the heart of Paris - there aren’t many of these left!
Still thirsty? Of course you are! Walk off that dessert by crossing the Boulevard d’Opera - glancing up to the left to see Opera Garnier, then across the Palais Royal and up to the wine bar Juveniles (47 Rue de Richelieu, 75001, Paris; Tel: 01 42 97 46 49). Now, these guys really know their stuff - it’s run by some friendly Brits and their selection isn’t limited to just French wines.
After that - well, I think it’s time you went home, don’t you...?-
